Main role
The respiratory therapist is responsible for theclinical monitoring of the patient under anesthesia or sedation-analgesia, in close collaboration with the anesthesiologist.
Specific operating room responsibilities
Vital functions monitoring:
- During the induction, maintenance and emergence phases of general and/or regional anesthesia.
- Monitoring heart rate, respiration, oxygen saturation, etc.
Equipment preparation and management:
- Preparation of medicines and blood products.
- Monitoring installation and verification (invasive or non-invasive).
- Preventing hardware-related infections.
- Independence to manage the inventory of equipment needed for inhalation therapy.
Technical support:
- Support during regional (spinal, epidural, nerve block) and general anesthesia.
- Intervention during cardiorespiratory emergencies.
- Supports the team during the installation of the surgery-specific client.
Professional autonomy:
- The respiratory therapist often acts independently in patient monitoring, while collaborating with the medical team.
Key Skills
- Excellent clinical assessment skills.
- Mastery of ventilation and oxygenation techniques.
- Reactivity in critical situations.
- In-depth knowledge of the cardiorespiratory system.
Profile wanted
- Diploma of college studies (DEC) in respiratory therapy techniques.
- Member of the Professional Order of Respiratory Therapists of Quebec.
- Interest in surgery (neurosurgery, orthopedics, urology, gynecology);
- Diploma of college studies (DEC) in respiratory therapy completed;
- At least 5 years of operating room experience (anesthesia assistance, sedation-analgesia);
- Updated CPR and ACLS training;
- Good command of French and intermediate level in English;
- Human and relational qualities.
